DSE 2011 Fads to Watch Out For

updated 02/03/11

Digital Signage Expo 2011 Trends

The Digital Signage Expo of 2011 is coming up in a few weeks and we were curious to find out what some of the trends will be at the show. We immediately went to the DSE website and found a great article discussing exactly that. (http://dse-365.ascendeventmedia.com/highlight.aspx?id=2415&p=206 ) Digital signage is very much a fad-thing and with any trend, things come and go, preferences change and technology improves. The changes and advancements with digital signage are a sure sign of how much technology has become very much a part of our everyday existence as cultures in general are more visually-stimulated than ever before. According the Digital Signage Expo article, there are 10 trends that will be apparent throughout the show. These are the displays of the future and what we hope to see blanketing store front windows, business' lobbies and waiting rooms across the world.

Video Walls

Digital signage, in the form of a video wall, is designed specifically to capture the attention of passersby and make them stop and stare. A large-size video wall will do just that. By combining screens to display exciting content will surely get any message noticed instantly! As our readers can see at our video archive page, large video walls make an advertisement stop people in their tracks. The beauty of video walls is it breaks the rectangular mold televisions have given us for years and allows advertisers to be more creative and innovative. Digital signage allows for more captivating presentations using usual shapes. These video walls also allow for positioning of digital advertising in more unique locations, such as in a corner of a room or in the center of a store.

Menu Boards

Digital signage has given restaurant owners freedom to update menus instantly, even when working with chains and multiple locations. Web-based, or networked, digital signage even allows for updating when users are not in the business' location. With the addition of a new health care law, stating nutritional labeling is required, digital menu boards are becoming more and more popular because of their versatility, low cost and ease of use.

Mobile Connectivity

People are constantly on the go and moving, yet require access to the internet at all times. Smart phones, for example, are becoming more and more advanced, allowing users the ability to connect to the internet in practically any location nowadays. Interactive digital signage requires customers to engage in interaction with the media advertisers, inviting them into their homes, phones and personal space. While this is a difficult task, the results are usually worth the struggle. By simply have a customer sign up for emails or text message advertisements, merchants are taking one step into their personal world and therefore creating a more memorable presence within a consumers' mind.

Glasses-Free 3D

3D movies are all the rage right now in Hollywood, which is trickling down into digital signage advertisements and media content. One of the biggest complaints from 3D displays is the requirement of those uncomfortable glasses. Not only do people hate the plastic frames, but it has also been heard to give headaches or even make viewers nauseous. Our question: Is this 3D movement just a fad or something that we will be seeing all over the place in the near future? Are three-dimensional digital holographs, ala Star Wars, not that far off?

Data-Driven Content

Data driven content, as we understand it, is digital signage displaying content that is relevant to a certain factor or trigger, such as the weather and mobile locations. Technology is becoming more advanced where it can sense the temperature or weather outside and display relevant information. A retail location, for example, could use this technology to display winter coats or hot chocolate advertisements when it's snowing and cold outside. Mobile triggers would pop up as users pass by certain locations on street or in a shopping mall. How great would it be if you are walking home from work and get a text message about a sale going on at the store you walk by every day? Wouldn't that make you more inclined to check it, even though it's a place you see all of the time? If you are walking in a mall and you receive a coupon through text message for shorts at Aeropostale, wouldn't you be more inclined to pop in there versus other stores? Highly effective marketing tools will increase traffic flow into businesses and cater to the surrounding environmental factors.

We've only gone through the first 5 trends and we are already incredibly excited for the show in a few weeks. We will stop for now and go over the next 5 in a few days.
