Self-Checkout the Wave of the Future

Typically our articles discuss the adoption of digital signage software & just how successful your company can be by simply implementing digital signage software into a presentational campaign. This week, we stumbled upon this interesting article discussing the adoption of digital signage kiosks, or more specifically, self-checkout systems. The digital self-checkout market is next in line for an increase in growth as time efficiency & accuracy are becoming more of a priority than ever before. Customers are in a hurry. They want their transactions to happen quickly yet correctly. Self-checkout has proven to improve the overall customer experience, by reducing wait times & providing them with a bit more inferred control. A benefit of digital self-checkout systems is lowering of labor costs a company will receive. This gives them the ability to hire more individuals to assist customers within a store, as opposed to simply positioning a cashier at a register. Also, the return on investment will cover the addition of this technology quickly.

According to this article we read, there are many different improvements that are driving towards the adoption of self-checkout. For starters, customers are becoming more accepting of such devices, as they are being designed more specifically to cater to customers & their preferences. An ATM-style design is something with which customers are more familiar, therefore making it easier for them to find buttons, ultimately speeding up their transaction time, improving customer satisfaction & minimizing wait times. Over the years, digital self-checkout systems have been developed & improved to become more reliable. Another improvement made has been the proper training of cashiers & staff members to properly use the self-checkout systems, guaranteeing a proper transaction. Grocery stores, for example, utilize a scale to weigh particular items, such as fresh produce. By properly training your employees on how to use the self-checkout system, they can guarantee customers are being charged the correct amount & are not becoming frustrated with the overall system or store. These systems have also been improved to learn the different weights of items, generating a database within the computer to better examine each item on a scale.

As mentioned in a previous article, the integration of portable checkout units has also helped improve a customer's overall experience within a store. This is related to self-checkout as it provides users with the individual attention they desire from a cashier, as well as the speediness, accuracy & efficiency desired from self-checkout systems. A portable device allows employees to "finish" transactions with customers, without leaving them to wait in long lines, potentially ruining a good experience. Customers who have been interacting with an employee may also feel more comfortable with that particular person, making the end result much more pleasant & guilt-free.

Finally, another advancement in the self-checkout world is the improvement in monitoring & diagnostics. If a system results in an error, due to digital advancements, a notification can instantly be sent to a technician who may even be able to fix the problem through a company's network. The advancements of technology have proven to benefit the retail world tremendously, by making a customer's experience more pleasant overall. While this article has strayed us from our usual digital signage speech, we felt it was important to highlight the advancements of self-checkout systems & how technology in general is making the retail marketing a more customer-orientated, time-efficient & user-friendly environment!
